Wanting to build a better foundation of my understanding of the Sumerian culture, Akkadian empire, Babylonian and Assyrian empires, I purchased this book -- primarily as it was available in both Audible and in paperback allowing me to easily re-read. I can understand and appreciate that the authors needed to condense information. However, anyone reading this stuff does not need to be "sold" by romantic suggestions trying to equate the civilizations to the modern era. If someone is going to the trouble to read about this time period, the person wants basic facts not editorial writing. Also, the book presumably has several authors who butcher any hope of having a cohesive timeline of events. For instance, page 15 discusses the Sumerian timeline by stating, "The earliest period with permanent towns in the region is called the Ubaid period, named after a small uncovered settlement Tell al-'Ubaid near ancient Ur. This period roughly starts circa 6500 BC and ends around 4100 BC." Later, in the chapter about Ur, at page 131, the author of this section (assuming a different author) states "The first human settlement [in the context of UR] can be dated as far back as 3800 BC and was part of the so-called Ubaid culture." So which is it? sometime between 6500 and 4100 BC or at a later time near 3800 BC. The book so far is very frustrating. It appears to be introductory for the most part. No endnotes. No footnotes. A very limited biography of 83 resources which are simply added to the end of the book without any explanation of which parts of the book they support and many of which are very generalized -- such as 4 citations to Wikipedia, 4 citations to Encyclopedia Britannica, and 4 citations to Ancient History Encyclopedia. How reliable - an introductory text which includes about 15% of its citations to other highly introductory and often unreliable sources. Thusfar, the most "captivating" thing to me is how the publisher(s) of this book captured my money.
